Frequently asked questions
What should I do first when a loved one passes away?
If the person was in hospice, call the hospice nurse. If the death was unexpected, call 911. After death is pronounced, contact a funeral home or cremation provider. You do not have to decide everything today.
How much does a funeral or cremation cost?
NFDA's 2024 General Price List study reports national medians of about $8,300 for a funeral with viewing and burial and about $6,280 for a funeral with cremation and a service. Direct cremation is usually much less.
Can I get funeral prices over the phone?
Yes. The FTC Funeral Rule requires funeral providers to quote prices by phone and to give you an itemized price list.
Are you a funeral home?
No. We are a free planning and referral resource that connects families with licensed local providers.
Can you help after the funeral?
Yes. We have a day-by-day checklist, paperwork guides, grief and family support resources, and a free online memorial page.
How do you make money?
Licensed providers may pay us for referrals, and some memorial products may use affiliate links. It never changes our guidance. See how we make money.
